The Development of the Aortic Isthmus in Human Fetal Life
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction. The aortic isthmus is a specific feature of fetal circulation. It undergoes regression by becoming wider postpartum. Developmental abnormalities of an isthmus may lead to congenital defects. Aim. The aim of this work was a morphometric study of the aortic isthmus in human fetuses aged between 4 and 8 months of fetal life. Materials and methods. We investigated 223 human fetuses, including 108 males and 115 females, aged between 4 and 8 months of fetal life. The entire material was obtained from the Department of Histology and Embryology at the Collegium Medicum, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Bydgoszcz, Poland. All fetal specimens had been conserved in a 9% formaldehyde solution for a period of more than 3 months. Only spontaneously aborted fetuses with a normal morphology and a normal karyotype were used in this study. We investigated the diameter of the aortic isthmus in human fetuses at different stages of prenatal life. We also analyzed the ratio of that diameter with regard to the diameters of other segments of the aorta and ductus arteriosus. We considered how these measurements varied depending on sex. Results, Discussion and Conclusions. We found the growth of the aortic isthmus diameter to be linear in time. The measured diameters were similar in males and females. No significant differences with regard to sex were found between the ratios of that vessel’s diameter to the diameters of the ascending and descending aorta Pol. Ann. Med., 2011; 18 (1): 42–51.

AORTIC TRANSECTION AND ITS SURGICAL REPAIR: A CASE REPORT FROM IRAN
Aortic transection is a rare but life-threatening complication of blunt chest trauma. Treatment options include open repair, medical management and most recently, endovascular repair. We report a 33 years old male with a traumatic aortic transection following a car accident. Aortic injury and its pseudo-aneurysm were confirmed by Chest CT scan and TEE in the descending thoracic aorta just belo...
متن کاملReference values for an index of fetal aortic isthmus blood flow during the second half of pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE During fetal life, the parallel position of the two cardiac ventricles confers a special status to the aortic isthmus. Flow through the isthmus reflects the balance between the performances of the two ventricles and their respective peripheral impedances. This study proposes a fetal aortic isthmus flow velocity index and its reference values defined on the basis of gestational age (GA...

OBJECTIVE Experimental studies on fetal lambs have shown that during an increase in the resistance to placental flow the delivery of oxygen to the brain is preserved as long as net flow through the aortic isthmus is antegrade. Our purpose was to determine whether the same changes in aortic isthmus flow in human subjects have any impact on neurodevelopmental outcome. STUDY DESIGN Forty-four fe...
متن کاملGrowth of the great vessels in the normal human fetus and in the fetus with cardiac defects.
BACKGROUND There is a paucity of quantitative anatomic data regarding human great vessel development that could be useful as a reference for fetal echocardiographers who must distinguish abnormal from normal cardiac development at early stages. METHODS AND RESULTS To determine normal growth patterns, we plotted the diameters of the aortic and pulmonary valves, ductus arteriosus, aortic isthmu...

Abstract Zinc is one of the essential elements of body which has an important role in natural growth, development, and many biological performances. Zinc deficiency is a major health problem and pregnant women are at high risk. 82% of pregnant women worldwide suffer from zinc deficiency. Zinc deficiency during pregnancy has dangerous and irreparable effects such as growth impairment, spontan...
